About Ria de Alvor Natural Reserve

The Ria de Alvor Natural Reserve is a vital coastal ecosystem situated near the town of Alvor on the southern coast of Portugal, in the Algarve region. This tidal estuary spans approximately 1,500 hectares and comprises a mosaic of salt marshes, dunes, mudflats, pinewoods, and freshwater lagoons, creating a unique habitat that supports a diverse range of flora and fauna. Established in 1984, the reserve is an important site under the Ramsar Convention for the protection of wetlands of international significance. The reserve's ecological richness is reflected in its birdlife, where migratory species such as flamingos, spoonbills, herons, and various waders can be observed year-round, making it a premier birdwatching destination in the Iberian Peninsula. Besides avifauna, the area harbors rare plant species and serves as a nursery for several fish and shellfish species, sustaining regional fisheries and biodiversity. Visitors are drawn to the reserve for its peaceful walking trails that wind through pine forests and along the estuary’s edge, enabling close encounters with wildlife. Kayaking and paddle sports are also popular, providing a unique perspective on the wetland's intricate channels and quiet waters. The nearby town of Alvor offers cultural charm, local dining, and easy access to the reserve. As a protected area, Ria de Alvor balances conservation with sustainable tourism, allowing visitors to experience one of Portugal’s most valuable natural habitats while supporting ongoing preservation efforts.
